Orientation Only Part
Of Week's Discoveries

the Corner. Across the street from
the Rotunda on University Avenue,
it begins at the Virginia National
Bank and officially ends with the
University Theatre a distance
much larger than a corner. It is
actually a shopping center in itself,
and it has grown over the years to
satisfy almost any shopping need of
a University student.

How this will change next year
with the advent of coeducation is
uncertain, but presently the Corner
is the home of at least seven
restaurants, diners, and cafeterias.
There is a pool hall, three barber
shops, two drug stores, and various
other commercial outposts selling
everything from clothes to records.

There even used to be a bowling
alley in what is now the basement
of Lloyd's Drugstore on the Corner,
and the original lanes can still be
seen in the floor.

The only things lacking here are
a post office and a liquor store. For
his alcoholic tastes, the student
must deal with the state at an ABC
store. One such establishment is
located at 421 E. Main St. and
another at 731 W. Main St. Main
Street is simply an extension of
University Avenue, and it eventually
leads into downtown Charlottesville.

The third ABC store in Charlottesville
is located in the Barracks
Road Shopping Center. This huge
area houses every conceivable type
of store, and it is located on Emmet
St., or Route 29, about a half-mile
north of the University.
